Which parts of May birthdays deserve the closest look?
May birthdays: the three things that set a month's length, the denominator a count needs, and what seasonality in births is and is not evidence of.
What to take away
- May has 31 days, and the compiler's effort is the other half of the answer. The month's own people have little to do with it.
- Days come first. A 31-day month holds roughly a tenth more names than a 28-day one before anything else is counted.
- Births come second. Monthly birth counts do move, but the swing is small beside the other two factors.
- Attention comes third and matters most. The month a compiler worked on first ends up the longest.
Days: the one fixed factor
May runs to 31 days. April, June, September and November stop at 30. February takes 28 or 29.
No amount of fame changes that. A list that aims to cover every birth in a month starts about a tenth longer for May than for February.
| Month | Days | Share of a common year |
|---|---|---|
| May | 31 | 8.5% |
| April | 30 | 8.2% |
| June | 30 | 8.2% |
| February | 28 | 7.7% |
Those shares are arithmetic, not a claim about who was born when. The day count is the only part of a May list that cannot be argued with, and it is the smallest of the three factors.
The February birthdays page reads short for a reason that has nothing to do with February.
Births: a real but small seasonal swing
Counts of live births move through the year. The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics publishes monthly natality counts for the United States. Statistics Canada publishes live births by month for Canada.
In both countries the counts are published yearly and cover the whole resident population. The seasonal peak is real, and it is modest. Where it falls depends on the country and the decade.
Neither agency publishes a count of notable births, and no one else does either.
Attention: the factor you cannot see
A compiler starts somewhere. That first month gets the most passes, the best sources and the most reader mail. Later months inherit what is left. This is the largest of the three factors, and the only one that leaves no mark on the page.
Read a long May list as a record of labour before you read it as a record of births. The celebrity birthday calendar cost breakdown sets out what that labour involves and who ends up paying for it. Months compiled last show the thinnest checking.
Example: two names on one day
May 14 carries Cate Blanchett (1969) and Mark Zuckerberg (1984). May 24 carries Queen Victoria (1819) and Bob Dylan (1941). A crowded day is not a busier birth day. It is a day a compiler covered twice.
Two names on one day
| Date | Person | Year of birth |
|---|---|---|
| May 2 | Dwayne Johnson | 1972 |
| May 5 | Adele | 1988 |
| May 13 | Stevie Wonder | 1950 |
| May 20 | Cher | 1946 |
| May 29 | John F. Kennedy | 1917 |
| May 31 | Clint Eastwood | 1930 |
Every date above can be checked against a newspaper archive, an official record or a published biography. None of them needs the month to explain why the person is known.
Checking a May entry before you trust it
The entries worth the closest look are the crowded days, the two ends of the month, and anything with no source attached. A crowded day invites a second entry that should not be there.
- May 1 and May 31 sit against April 30 and June 1. A date recorded a few days out lands in a neighbouring month.
- An entry with a year but no day, or a day but no year, has not been checked at all.
- A living person's date stays unconfirmed until a source states it, the standard set for biographies of living people.
- Older entries can carry a date from a calendar that is not the Gregorian one, which the August birthdays article works through.
What seasonality does and does not tell you
Season of birth is a real field of study. The research collected under season of birth is careful about place and period. Popular summaries of it are not. A pattern in births describes a population at a moment in time, not the names on a page.
Even a well-measured peak is small: the busiest month carries only a few percent more births than the quietest. A month with slightly more births is not a month that produces different people. A May list that claims a trait for everyone born in May has stopped counting and started guessing.
A claim such as "more comedians were born in May" is a ratio. The top half comes from a list of comedians. The bottom half, everyone born in May, is rarely given. That missing half is the plain form of the base rate fallacy.
Comparing May with June birthdays is fair only when both lists were built by the same inclusion rule and checked to the same depth.
Common questions
Does May really have more notable births than other months?
Slightly more days, so slightly more names. May has 31 days against April's 30 and February's 28, and that difference alone explains about a tenth of any gap you see.
Why does the May list look fuller than the February list?
Someone worked on it longer, or started there. February's page is short because February is short, and because it was not the page the compiler cared about first.
How many notable May birthdays should a good list carry?
There is no target number. A list should be exactly as long as its inclusion rule makes it, and padding one month to match another turns a harmless quirk into a false claim.
Can a site work out the most common birth month from its own entries?
Only for its own entries. National statistics offices publish the real counts, and which month comes top depends on the country and the period you ask about.
