A family tree found online is not a source. It is somebody's conclusion, assembled from other people's conclusions, and the further back it goes the more of it rests on nothing that anyone can now inspect. Distinguishing a compiled tree from the documents under it is the whole skill.

Compilation and evidence are different things

The underlying standard is the same one used everywhere in historical work. A primary source is a record created at or near the time by someone in a position to know. A register entry made at the event is primary. A family bible written up decades later is a later account. A tree on a website that cites another tree on another website is neither: it is a copy with no visible bottom.

The last row is the important one and it looks like the opposite of a problem. Ten trees agreeing is a single claim with nine copies unless each cites its own document, and the copying is invisible because the copies do not say they are copies.

Back-calculated dates and thin links

Two specific failures are worth naming. A date derived from an age recorded at another event is a computation, not a record, and it inherits every rounding in the original. The March historical page works through that arithmetic and what it can and cannot support.

The second is structural. Lines of descent converge as you go back, which means the same ancestors appear repeatedly in a single tree, a phenomenon known as pedigree collapse. It has a practical consequence for verification: a single mistaken link early in a line propagates into a great many later claims, and those claims then appear to corroborate each other because they genuinely share the error.

How to read a claim about an early figure

  • Look for the document, not the tree. If the tree does not name one, the claim is unsupported no matter how detailed it is.
  • Check what the document says rather than what the tree says it says. Transcriptions drift.
  • Treat a date given with unusual precision for a distant period as a signal to look harder, not as a sign of good research.

Common questions

Is an online tree useless?

No. It is a finding aid: a way to discover which documents might be relevant. Used as a pointer it is valuable; used as a citation it is a copy of an opinion.

Why do so many trees reach famous ancestors?

Because a line that reaches one is worth publishing and gets copied, while the weak link in the middle is not visible in the copy. Selection does the rest.

What counts as enough evidence for a link?

A record that connects the two people specifically, rather than one that shows both existed in the same place. Same name, same parish, same period is a hypothesis, and a great many published lines rest on exactly that.
